The first two chapters of the book Jarhead by Anthony Swofford are about the main character, Anthony, looking through his old militarty things in his basement, such as his old cammies which he never returned and old maps of the middle east. He had to open his ruck so he could open himself because hes been avioding dealing with his old memeories. His ruck is located in his basement because the basement is where people put things that they dont want to look at a lot so its representative to the memories he had when he was in the middle east. In the next chapter the story goes back to when he was at sationed at Twentnine Palms Marine Corps Base in the California's Mojave Desert and hes part of the Second Battalion Seventh Marines Survaeillance and Target Acquistion Platoon. They are standby to invade Kuwait so they rent a bunch of war movies to try to get themselves pumped for war. They rent films such as Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalyspe Now. They are afraid that this war will end up like Vietnam because they dont want to stuck there forever. They try to hid their fear by violent indiffence, fake ease and standard issue bravura but they still want to fight. (summary by allan and sam)
